You can see web push notifications when they appear at the top or bottom of the opened browser’s window, sometimes despite you being offline. Push notifications can be indeed pushy, particularly when they are accompanied by an alert. It comes as no surprise that you want to disable them. Read on to find out more.
Google Chrome
Click on the three-dotted icon at the top right corner of your browser window and then choose “Settings.”
Scroll down to find “Advanced.”
Select Content settings that you’ll find below “Privacy and security.”
Click “Notifications.”
There you’ll have 3 options:
- To allow all sites to show you notifications
- Not to allow any site to show you notifications
- “Ask when a site wants to show notifications.” – in case you’re not sure whether you want to get notifications or not.
If you’ve allowed a website to send you notifications, but then you changed your mind, click “Manage exceptions”, after that put X to the right of the site in question and press “Done.”
Firefox
Once you visit a website that wants to show you notifications, you’ll see a speech bubble (like in a comic strip) in the URL bar. These bubbles replace the larger pop-up window. This bubble will then wiggle very quickly to let you know that a notification has been blocked by your browser.
In case you change your mind in the future about a site that you’ve previously disabled notifications from, it’s easy to change.
Go to Firefox Preferences => Privacy & Security => Permissions, and then click on Settings. This is where you can see the sites you’ve blocked and you can allow their notifications now if you like.
